Item Lower-Stone-6725. Item 6725JC. Grace Church, locally known as “Lower Stone”, is one of the oldest churches in North Carolina, having been organized about 1745. Grace church began with influx of German settlers in the piedmont North Carolina mostly from Pennsylvania during the 1740’s and 50’s. Grace Lower Stone church has been the mother church for the formation of other Reformed churches in the area. The church is built of irregular field stone with a 12 foot gable roof. The walls measure 32" thick at ground level, 27" thick at floor level, and 21" thick at gallery level.
